This heartwarming incident happened in 2022. The local police department took to its Facebook page to share this beautiful story as part of its “Feel Good Friday” news series, reflecting the remarkable bond between a man and his canine companion.

As usual, the man and his best friend, Sarah June, were enjoying their morning walk around the lake, an activity he says they do twice a day.
The weather was lovely, and they enjoyed it there and had a great time outdoors together. The unexpected incident happened during their regular stroll around the lake. Suddenly, Mr. Smith’s electric Wheelchair lost grip on the mulch, and the Wheelchair started sliding down the slope, leading to the older man getting accidentally dumped into the water. He was so frightened. He began to drown gradually. Mr. Smith was helpless at that moment since there were no humans around. He thought he was facing an unfortunate ending.
With no ability to swim and finding himself in a terrible situation, the older man tried severely to stay afloat, attacking against the water’s pull. The potential for a tragic ending became visible to Sarah, but Sarah June jumped into action with a remarkable display of loyalty and quick thinking.
Soon after Recognizing her owner’s dangerous situation, the devoted canine quickly intervened, performing a heroic action that avoided an unfortunate ending. In that crucial moment, Sarah June’s instinctive response came out as the guardian angel who ensured the safety and well-being of her beloved owner.
Soon after recovery, Mr.Smith told WPTV News, “She’s such a good dog. Everybody in this neighborhood loves her, and they all look out for her.”
Mr. Smith and his canine friend, Sarah June, had been together for seven years when the incident happened. Seven years is a bit old for Sarah, but during that critical moment, she gathered all her energy. She barked for help strongly and anxiously.
She continued barking. She wanted to save her beloved owner from this critical and dangerous situation. She was a loyal and faithful dog. Fortunately, at that time, two men were working close to the street.
Sarah’s barking caught the attention of Edward Suhling and his friend Jacob, who was later identified as a policeman. They hurriedly called the Port St. Lucie Police Department, informing them that a senior person was drowning in the lake in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Officer Doty got out of his patrol vehicle and found out that Mr. Smith had flooded up to his neck in the water. With the two onlookers, Mr. Edward Suhling and Mr. Jacob, he rushed to support Mr. Smith, pulled him out of the water, and laid him down safely on the bank. Since the Police Department personnel came in time, Mr. Smith was not seriously injured, thanks to Sarah. He received the necessary treatments and medical attention on the scene. But thankfully, he was able to leave the scene and return home immediately after receiving medical assistance.

Mr.Smith’s electric Wheelchair was damaged from the fall and the water. It is so unfortunate. But thankful that he was able to save his life because of the dedicated, loyal furry friend he had. Also, it is heartening to hear that first responders from the St. Lucie County Fire District were quick to assist the elderly gentleman after his fall. Their willingness to help and Sarah June’s proud escorting exemplify the community spirit and dedication to service. Of course, it is essential for such incidents to be handled with care, ensuring the well-being and safety of senior people who are in vulnerable situations.
