During her childhood and young adulthood, Marykathryn deeply feared dogs and cats. Still, she encountered no hesitation in handling garter snakes or frogs discovered in their backyard. Her father’s severe allergy to anything with hair led to their choice of turtles as pets. Although she still has a special affection for these reptiles, she would like to have them as pets again. She acknowledges that turtles do not offer the same level of cuddliness as other animals.
After marriage, Marykathryn Kirchner’s (ex) husband expressed a strong desire for a dog. Having just purchased a house, he believed adding a dog and some children would complete their family. At that point, Mary Kathryn intended to welcome a small, calm dog into their home that did not shed and would not disturb the neighbors. She anticipated this pup would never sleep with them or be allowed on the furniture.
One day, her ex-husband went to the Milwaukee Humane Society. He texted her that he had found the perfect dog for them and asked if he could bring her home immediately. Unable to assess the situation due to work commitments, she responded that she was unable to meet her first.
However, he decided to pull out the emotional artillery and play on her feelings. He informed her that the dog had been in the shelter for weeks and claimed that she would be euthanized unless they adopted her that weekend. That was the turning point, and the next day, they welcomed Peanut into their home. Her name was promptly chosen as Peanut because of her petite size, even though she weighed just thirty pounds!

Peanut, a chihuahua, was six years old. She was calm and quiet. Initially, she was highly fearful, often seeking a place of safety. After several weeks, she gradually warmed up to them, and they grew fond of her equally. She confidently led their walks, shared their bed at night, and snuggled with them on the couch.
Peanut played a vital role in Marykathryn’s life, providing support through two brain surgeries. Her love extended to their foster kids at ease in their home. During Marykathryn’s painful divorce, Peanut remained a constant source of comfort. Peanut always knows how to help. Peanut reminded her that someone was always there for Marykathryn. Taking those walks became a therapeutic way to return to the world and breathe fresh air. Peanut’s affection was not limited to their family. Exploring the paths in Austin became a favorite pastime for her, where she joyfully chased birds, squirrels, and even deer.

Peanut and Marykathryn relocated to Milwaukee after six months, where she fell ill. Her mother stayed with Peanut at her home to provide companionship. Unfortunately, within two weeks, Peanut passed away in her arms. The loss left her completely shocked, as if another piece of her heart had been torn away. That night, she woke up early with a sense that Peanut was urging her to visit the shelter and rescue another puppy. She firmly convinced her mom they needed to go to the shelter that day.

At the shelter, they interacted with two dogs; one was more occupied in his ball than in making a connection with MaryKathryn. The other, named ‘Lady,’ allowed her to pick her up and cuddle her tightly. However, she is so tiny, approximately five pounds. On the recommendation of the Counselor, they revisited “Lady .” Lady once again nestled up to her as affectionately as before and came home with them. The name of ‘Lady’ was changed to Ruby Rose Kirchner.

Marykathryn invited family and friends over to introduce them to Ruby and pay tribute to Peanut. Many people are not fans and even dislike chihuahuas; Ruby has a typical way associated with her breed. She snuggles with the affection of a cat and exhibits behaviors like a human. Unlike the typical chihuahua, Ruby refrains from barking; even if you try to pick her up, she may shake a bit but will shower you with love nonetheless.

Ruby gets on well with most humans. She possesses an adorable career and has accompanied MaryKathryn on numerous journeys, car rides, restaurants, and movies, as well as stays in hotels, the Las Vegas Strip, and even visits to the hospital. Their bond was put to the test when they experienced a car accident, and Ruby and Marykathryn found themselves in an ambulance together. The nurses took care of Ruby while Marykathryn underwent a CT scan.
Ruby has proven to be an exceptional companion for a travel nurse and someone dealing with chronic migraines. She exhibits patience on road trips, fits comfortably under the plane seat, and never utters a bark or damage hotel rooms. With her tiny size of five pounds, she manages a good workout going up and down stairs, and interestingly, she does not require much food. Ruby adores continuous petting.

Ruby holds a special place in Marykathryn’s life as more than just a best friend. On some painful days, she found the strength to persevere, not only for her family, niece, nephew, and cherished friends but especially for Ruby, who has become her baby.
At the age of ninety-one, Marykathryn’s grandmother fell seriously ill and came to live with them, and she developed a deep affection for Ruby. They arranged a heated blanket on Granny’s lap and snuggled Ruby in. Gran would pet her and fondly say, ‘What a great KITTY HE is!’. During one of her hospitalizations, Marykathryn managed to sneak Ruby in. She asked Granny if she would like to pet Ruby. The nurse kindly granted Granny a brief break from the hospital routine to spend a few precious moments petting Ruby. Once she settled Ruby in bed, Granny’s heart rate lowered, and her breathing and oxygen saturation increased.
